Prevention of Family Violence & Bullying

If you are in a family violence emergency, call 911 or contact your local Police, RCMP, or Tribal Police.
Family Violence affects us all in one way or another. It is difficult to assess the full impact of family violence in society, but the evidence shows that literally thousands of Albertans are affected by family violence and bullying every year. We know that family violence spans the sectrum of gender, age, income, education, religion, culture and geography.
Family violence and bullying are all too common problems in Alberta. In 2004, 5520 spousal abuse incidents were reported to Alberta Police, and 3865 charges were laid. In the same period, 15 spousal homicides occurred, and another 15 have taken place between January and October of 2005. In Canada, it is estimated that bullying happens every 7 minutes on the playground and every 25 minutes in the classroom.
In May 2004, the Alberta Government hosted a provincial roundtable with the main goal being to develop a comprehensive set of recommendations for action that will form the cornerstone of a provincial strategy for the prevention of family violence and bullying.
In response to the roundtable, $35 million has been allocated over 3 years to implement a cross-government action plan. Government departments have been working closely under this plan and implementing such initiatives as a $5.5 million Community Incentive Fund to help communities take action on family violence and bullying, a public education and awareness campaign that is aimed at preventing and stopping bullying and promoting positive behaviour and attitudes within and between individuals, families and groups.
The Prevention of Family Violence and Bullying division in Region 7 is committed to working with our communities to find solutions. If you have any questions, please contact us at (780)305-2440, or visit the following websites for more information:
